Bow

In traditional Chinese culture, expressions of love were often subtle and understated. To convey enduring affection and longing, intricately woven knots became cherished tokens of devotion. Lovers would exchange such knots as symbols of their bond, while, upon a daughter’s marriage, her mother would traditionally tie a ceremonial sash for her as she offered guidance for the wedding rituals. This tradition, known as jieli, later became associated with marriage itself, leaving a graceful imprint on the Chinese language and culture.

Today, a bow remains a familiar symbol of love and celebration, often tied around a gift before it is presented. Beyond its decorative beauty, the bow carries an auspicious meaning in Chinese: the pronunciation of “butterfly” is similar to that of “fortune.” Inspired by this wordplay, the bow-shaped design quietly conveys a wish for fortune to arrive again and again.
