Goldfish

Goldfish originated in the Zhejiang region of China. Admired for their vivid colors and graceful appearance, they were once kept for the pleasure of the imperial court. During the Southern Song dynasty, Emperor Gaozong ordered ponds to be specially built for goldfish, sparking a popular pastime of pond-making and goldfish viewing throughout Hangzhou. In Japan, goldfish were later kept in glass containers, where their graceful movements through clear water offered a refreshing respite from the summer heat. Over time, summer goldfish viewing became a distinctive and charming part of Japanese culture.

In this brooch, designer Arista Lee uses an openwork sculptural technique to capture the goldfish in a relaxed, unhurried swim, emphasizing its rounded and auspicious form. Scattered diamonds shimmer across the design like sunlight dancing on the surface of the water.

The work carries a simple wish for its wearer: even amid the pace and pressures of everyday life, may the heart remain as calm, carefree, and at ease as a goldfish gliding through clear water.
