Kiwi

The kiwi is New Zealand’s distinctive national bird, named for its characteristic call, often described as resembling “keee-weee.” Before humans arrived, New Zealand had no native terrestrial mammalian predators, allowing birds to forage freely on the forest floor without the need to evade land-based predators. Over time, the kiwi’s wings gradually became reduced, eventually leaving it unable to fly.

Shy and remarkably sedentary by nature, the kiwi can sleep for up to twenty hours a day and is primarily active at night.
