Pine and Crane

In Song Dynasty literati painting, the pine tree symbolized steadfastness and integrity, admired for its ability to withstand the harshness of winter. The crane, meanwhile, has long been regarded in Eastern culture as an auspicious and celestial bird. Together, the pine and crane embody the traditional blessing of enduring vitality and longevity, expressed in the saying, “A thousand-year crane rests upon a thousand-year pine.”

The creation of Pine and Crane was an intricate and demanding process. From developing the composition and constructing the armature to sculpting the form in oil clay, interdisciplinary artist Arista Lee spent four and a half months bringing the crane’s streamlined posture and spirit to life. Its wings and feathers were meticulously sculpted to suggest the sensation of air flowing across them. Casting and assembly required another two and a half months, bringing the total creation process to seven months.

In the finished sculpture, an ancient pine rises through a majestic sea of rolling clouds, while a celestial crane alights upon its branches. Standing gracefully on one leg with the other tucked beneath its body, the crane quietly listens to the distant, soothing sound of wind moving through the pine.
